They're burying the Chairman today. Carl Venne, chairman of the Crow Nation. Actually, they're burying him right now. The mass is going on right this minute, up at the Multi in Crow.
There's a lot of death here. I was reading his obituary, the part where it lists those who have proceeded a person in death, and it just seemed ridiculous. To list everyone that's been lost ... you could never do it.
There are too many deaths.
We had a pep assembly for our basketball teams yesterday morning. Fog machine, music, everything. We sent them out like heroes, shaking the hands of the men who won the state championship for us in 1980. In some places, games are quickly forgotten, but not here. Their last games of the season may be tomorrow, depending on if they win or lose. What do they have to look forward to after that? Will standing in that gym, being cheered by their peers and their predecessors, be the highlight of their life?
It was supposed to snow last night. It didn't. But the mountains still look beautiful, even though what we hoped for didn't come. Maybe tomorrow. Or maybe we will just enjoy today and let tomorrow take care of itself.
